Inexpensive Art Supplies That Are Actually Awesome
You don’t need to spend a ton of money on supplies to make art. In fact, using things that feel a bit less precious and a bit more low-stakes will help you relax, experiment, and loosen up. Here are my faves… by the way, the links on this page are affiliate links, which means if you click through and buy something, I’ll receive a little bit of compensation to keep the art lights on. But it won’t cost you anything extra! Anyway, on to my faves:
Crayola Supertips
I will die on the hill of Crayola Supertips markers. These babies lay down really smooth and saturated color, and they are a pleasure to draw with. I often use these at book events when I draw quick portraits of children who visit my table. The angled tips mean you can get a fine line or a broad stroke. A winner all-around.
Pentel Pocket Brush Pen
This ink-filled Pentel Pocket brush pen can be controversial among more traditional artists since it’s a bit un-fancy, but I freaking love it. It’s easy and fuss-free (one of my favorite F-words) and a pleasure to work with on many types of paper. You can refill the ink cartridge when you run out, and the synthetic brush tip stays intact for many months of use. Many, to most, of my View From My Run drawings use this pen!
Sakura Pigma Micron Pens
The Micron is a classic, simple pen you can probably find in the supply closet at your day job, or at your local office supply store. It’s so versatile, and you can do so many techniques with it. The ink is permanent, so it’s also great for painting over (I love me some watercolor). The range of tip sizes mean you can experiment with any kind of line you want. My favorite size is 01.
Fan-Pan Watercolor Set
I am a FAN of the Fan-Pan Watercolor Set! I mean, who wouldn’t be inspired to paint with this explosion of color in the palm of your hand? A few steps above the really cheap watercolor sets, these colors go on beautifully and can give you really nice, saturated color. And, if you have a small space, they are a pleasure to store because the fan folds up into a neat little package. I’ve used this fan often when I do how-tos on Instagram, and in my Character Design Workshop.
