Author-Illustrator School Visits

I give children an age-appropriate look at how picture books are created, with a focus on creativity and the joy of imagination.

My presentations are ideal for pre-K through 2nd grade. Your students will see behind-the-scenes of how a picture book is created, complete with props, visits from characters, and lots of interaction! We’ll finish up with a lively drawing game that always has silly results and leaves kids inspired to create their own characters.

Here are the basics:

  • 45 min or one class period

  • Classroom-sized groups or combined in a large auditorium-style assembly (to be determined with school)

  • I am happy to sign pre-sold books on the day of the event

Preferred locations are within one hour of New York City.

MY BOOKS ARE PUBLISHED BY ALL OF THE MAJOR HOUSES:

“LORI WAS FULL OF ENERGY AND KEPT THE STUDENTS FULLY ENGAGED—AND WANTING MORE!”

2023-2024 Rates and Details

2023-24 Rates (In-Person)

$1,250 per day plus travel reimbursement. This includes up to 2 performances of the same presentation in the same day.

Additional Information

School should provide a screen and projector to which I can connect a Mac laptop. For large, auditorium-style settings, sound amplification is required. A knowledgeable tech resource should be on-site to help with setup and any troubleshooting. If a projector and mic are not available, I can do an analog version of the presentation in a classroom setting only. School should also provide an easel and large drawing pad approximately 18x24” in size. I bring my own markers!

A Special Note from Lori

Thank you so much for your interest in having me present at your school! Meeting an author is always a wonderful experience for children and leaves them inspired to create their own stories and drawings. As a parent myself, I respect and admire the work done by educators—you are true heroes! I also see first-hand how tight school budgets are for special events such as inviting an author, which is why I keep my day rate fair and reasonable. It covers not only my time to appear on the day of the event, but also the extensive preparation I do in advance to ensure a great experience for all.

I also realize there are special circumstances, so I donate one presentation per calendar year based on need. Please contact me if you feel your school may qualify.

About my picture books

My books have been published by Scholastic, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, and more. The New York Times called Pax and Blue “a sprightly debut”, and art from the book was recognized by the Society of Illustrators Original Art Show.
